Pure Evil and the Vince Lombardi School of Government

If the obscene performance put on by the GOP House leadership over the past few days doesn't convince the electorate to eject the GOP from the driver's seat, I don't know what will. Here we have a group that was willing to let a pedophile predator have the run of the Boy's Choir if that's what it took to keep the whole thing quiet. As in all else with the Rethugs, politics isn't everything--it's the only thing. And now that the shit has hit the Wurlitzer, their only concern is damage control. Send the "funny Uncle" off to the sanitarium where he can't be pestered by embarrassing questions, circle the wagons and line up the talking points, contract a sudden case of group amnesia, and--worst of all--BLAME THE VICTIMS. Read the last line in the Hastert quote where Denny issues a veiled threat against the "bastards who blew the whistle."

G.O.P. Tries to Limit Damage in Foley Case - New York Times
Former Representative Mark Foley of Florida has checked himself into a rehabilitation facility for alcoholism treatment, as Republican leaders in Florida and Washington spent today trying to contain the political damage of reports that the congressman engaged in sexually explicit communications with Congressional pages.

In Washington, House Speaker Dennis Hastert called instant messages that Mr. Foley exchanged with a page in 2003 as "vile and repulsive," and he said he first saw those messages on Friday.

"I repeat again: The Republican leaders of the House did not have them," the speaker said about those particular messages. "We have all said so and on the record. But someone did have them, and the ethics committee, the Justice Department, the news media and anyone who can should help us find out who."
WE didn't see the IMs (Maybe we heard about them or read transcripts of them, but we didn't actually SEE Foley type those words); WE didn't have them (Are you kidding? You think we'd be stupid enough to leave our fingerprints on this?); But (harrumph harrumph) SOMEONE--some nefarious obstructor of justice, which we righteously and with great resolve wish to see served (just don't serve me a damned subpoena!)--had them. And we'll get those evildoers!
