My country, 'tis of thee

Sweet land of blissful stupidity, of thee I blog.

Not one day goes by without some new outrage committed by our GOP government, yet no one seems to give a shit. Worse, the guardians of public discourse make excuses for the bastards, even going so far as to equate criticism of government policy with terrorism (Tweety, if you're reading this, I'm talking about you).

I grew up in the 60's in the midst of civil unrest. People marched for civil rights, for peace, for justice. They got beat up, shot at, attacked by dogs, blasted with firehoses and dragged off to jail. Some even got killed. But they forced the country to change--for the better.

Now much of that is being undone. And we just sit there, inert observers of our own undoing. Anesthetized by the banality that surrounds us, we watch as if in a dream, unfeeling, while the limbs of lady liberty are hacked off. All set to the tune of a patriotic lullaby telling us gently to go back to sleep.
