Les Moonves, chief Bush monkey boy at CBS, chases away another veteran newscaster.

CBS' John Roberts Jumps to CNN

NEW YORK -- Veteran CBS News White House correspondent John Roberts, snubbed by his network during the long and continuing search for Dan Rather's successor, is joining CNN.

He was widely considered the top internal choice to succeed Rather, who stepped down as evening news anchor last March. But as the months went on without CBS announcing a successor, and with patron CBS News President Andrew Heyward forced out of his job, it became clear Roberts wasn't a favorite of CBS chief executive Leslie Moonves.

As Bob Schieffer has filled in on the evening news _ boosting the show's ratings _ CBS has courted NBC "Today" show host Katie Couric to become the new anchor. Couric's NBC contract expires in May.

Here's what scapegoated CBS produces Mary Mapes (of Dan Rather/Bush TANG bailout "scandal" fame) had to say about Les:

"He doesn't know journalism from dirt farming," Mapes said. In the book, noting that Moonves courted and then married "Early Show" anchor Julie Chen, she writes: "I used to say everything Les knows about journalism had been sexually transmitted. Now I know even that hasn't taught him much."

Anyone who would seek to replace Dan Rather with Katie Colic should be beaten senseless with the second reel of "Good Night, and Good Luck".
