South Dakota's new law banning almost all abortions is creating a rift among anti-abortion Republicans during an election year.

The law bars abortions unless they're needed to save a woman's life. The ban has underscored disagreements between the law's supporters and those who favor exceptions for rape and incest. It has also exposed Republican disagreements over how best to reduce abortions when most Americans support keeping them legal.
