PhonyBaloneyJobism
That is, when your phony-baloney job matters more than the truth. I can’t think of any other motivation for Jonathan Chait’s vituperative response to criticism of his rag’s defense of Ann Coulter.
As readers of this blog know (both of you), I am not an Ann fan. She adds nothing of value to the “political conversation;” in fact, she is a prime contributor to its decline. She has masked the ugliness of racism, fascism, and hate with her admittedly pretty face and has done as much as anyone else on the Right to help mainstream that ugliness. As a result, advocates of torture, pre-emptive war, and indiscriminate slaughter of civilians who used to get an audience only at Klan rallies or their corner bar now appear routinely on TV, billed as “terrorism experts,” while hosts and hostesses of news and commentary programs nod approvingly as right-wing guests label opponents “traitors” and “America haters.” In saner times these nutjobs would have been laughed off the stage; today, thanks to Ann Coulter and the rest of the Wingnut Welfare brigade, they dominate it.
No one who cares anything about the truth has any excuse for defending a serial liar like Ann Coulter.
