Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Hurting U.S. Terror Fight - washingtonpost.com

The war in Iraq has become a primary recruitment vehicle for violent Islamic extremists, motivating a new generation of potential terrorists around the world whose numbers may be increasing faster than the United States and its allies can reduce the threat, U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded.

A 30-page National Intelligence Estimate completed in April cites the "centrality" of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the insurgency that has followed, as the leading inspiration for new Islamic extremist networks and cells that are united by little more than an anti-Western agenda. It concludes that, rather than contributing to eventual victory in the global counterterrorism struggle, the situation in Iraq has worsened the U.S. position, according to officials familiar with the classified document.

"It's a very candid assessment," one intelligence official said yesterday of the estimate, the first formal examination of global terrorist trends written by the National Intelligence Council since the March 2003 invasion. "It's stating the obvious."

Obvious to anyone with eyes to see. Why, then, isn't this plastered across every front page and every television screen? Why do our media milquetoasts continue to truckle to the GOP? When are the American people going to wake up and demand accountability from our Republican government and its enablers? The war in Iraq was launched based on a pack of lies; it was prosecuted ineptly, and deliberately so; rebuilding was nothing more than an excuse for a massive, corrupt corporate quid pro quo; thousands of American troops have died; tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis--the very people we came to "liberate"--are dead as well; our "leaders" have no plan, offering only more of the same...yet anyone who dares to speak these truths in public is eviscerated not only by the Rovian Gestapo but also by the fourth estate. All we like sheep have been led astray, yet we march obediently, silently to the abattoir. Democracy is dying at the hands of those sworn to defend it, and we eagerly reach to get our fingers around its neck as well.

May God help America--we sure as hell need it.
