He just can't help himself
Conehead just can't bring himself to say anything negative about a Republican without dragging a Democrat into the scene to prove his devotion to High Broderism. As he admits in a moment of unintentional candor, he just can't stop himself - particularly when it comes to John Edwards and his haircuts. Cohen should have quit while he still had a shred of integrity left. But that's the problem with scoundrels - you can never count on them to do the right thing.

It hardly matters to me that Thompson once lobbied for the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association. But the issue is not abortion, as some would have it, but truthfulness, candor, honesty -- call it what you will. The clear impression that we're entitled to take away from this episode is that when faced with some unpleasant truth, Thompson fibs. It ain't nice. It certainly ain't presidential.Technorati Tags: Richard Cohen, wanker, Thompson, Edwards, haircuts, immoral equivalence, High Broderism
Lest you think I am some sort of partisan hack, I have similar misgivings about John Edwards and his $400 haircuts. Here, too, the issue is not what he paid his barber but his apparent willingness to trim the truth. He can't -- I can't stop myself -- brush that away.
