States' Rights My Ass

The "states' rights" dodge was never anything but a cover for racism in any case. As this incident demonstrates yet again (think Bush vs. Gore, 2000), the GOP is more than happy to trample on "state's rights" when it suits them. Today's GOP has no real convictions - aside from criminal convictions, that is. Platform planks like "family values" and "national security" are nothing more than cynical slogans intended to fool the rubes (inclusive of our so-called liberal media). Even worse, Republican pretensions to Christian piety are exposed repeatedly as hypocritical self-delusion at best or heartless Machiavellianism at worst by actions like this. Damn them all to hell.

U.S. Rule Limits Emergency Care for Immigrants - New York Times
The federal government has told New York State health officials that chemotherapy, which had been covered for illegal immigrants under a government-financed program for emergency medical care, does not qualify for coverage. The decision sets the stage for a battle between the state and federal governments over how medical emergencies are defined.
